Building advertising for the way people use AI

OpenAI announced a new visual ad format in ChatGPT with measurement controls. Here is what it means for small business ad budgets and how to fund a test.

OpenAI announced a new visual ad format inside ChatGPT on October 5, 2026, alongside expanded measurement tools, attribution partnerships, and brand suitability controls for advertisers. The announcement, published on OpenAI's site, is written for brands and agencies. This page reads it from the other side of the table: the owner of a three-truck HVAC company or a four-person marketing shop who wants to know whether ChatGPT is a place to put $1,000 a month, and whether the result can be measured.

Short answer: ChatGPT ads can already be bought through a self-serve Ads Manager that OpenAI began rolling out in beta in May 2026. The new visual format is a narrower test, and the post stops short of the pricing a small advertiser would need to plan a budget.

What OpenAI announced about ChatGPT ads

OpenAI's post describes a visual ad format for ChatGPT and also announces measurement tools, attribution partnerships, and brand suitability controls. OpenAI will test the format first during image generation in ChatGPT, for users on the Free and Go plans, starting later in October 2026 in the US with an initial group of advertisers. The ads will be clearly labeled and kept separate from the image being created.

The post names the partners: AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, and Tenjin for attribution; Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp for conversion data; and Fospha, Measured, INCRMNTAL, Haus, and WorkMagic for advanced measurement and incrementality testing. Attribution partnerships matter to a small advertiser because connecting ad exposure to actual sales is what makes a comparison with Google or Meta possible at all.

Brand suitability controls are the advertiser-side settings that govern the kinds of contexts an ad can appear next to.

Specifically, a feature called Negative Phrases is available to "qualifying advertisers," and OpenAI is piloting independent brand suitability evaluations with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. If you run a children's tutoring service or a faith-based counseling practice, that is the setting you will want to read closely. The post does not say what makes an advertiser qualifying.

The announcement does not describe the ad unit's dimensions or creative specifications. ChatGPT is already a paid channel US small businesses can sign up for alongside Google, Meta, and TikTok: OpenAI [began rolling out a beta self-serve Ads Manager on May 5, 2026](https://openai.com/blog/new-ways-to-buy-chatgpt-ads), with CPM and CPC buying, and is opening it to more businesses gradually. The October post points businesses to ads.openai.com to sign up, but does not say when the new visual format will open beyond its initial group of advertisers. No eligibility rule based on advertiser size appears in either post.

OpenAI's ChatGPT ads announcement: announced vs. not stated

as of Oct. 5, 2026
Announced
  • A visual ad format, tested first during image generation for Free and Go users in the US, starting later in October with an initial group of advertisers
  • Ads clearly labeled and kept separate from the generated image
  • Named attribution, conversion-data, and incrementality partners
  • Negative Phrases for qualifying advertisers; suitability pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science
Not stated in the announcement
  • Pricing, CPMs, or minimum spend for the visual format
  • When the visual format opens beyond the initial advertiser group
  • What makes an advertiser “qualifying” for Negative Phrases
  • Eligibility rules by advertiser size
Takeaway: ChatGPT ads are already sold through a self-serve Ads Manager beta that opened in May 2026. The new visual format is a limited test — and budget decisions about it depend on the answers still missing on the right.

Why this matters for US small business owners

Google, Meta, and TikTok are three widely used paid channels for US small businesses. A fourth surface that small businesses can sign up for changes the planning question.

Behavior is the reason to pay attention. A person can use ChatGPT to work out what to look for in a licensed electrician before ever typing "electrician near me" into Google. That buyer is further from a credit card and further from a decision. Reaching someone at the research stage pays off only if you can tie that moment to a booked job weeks later.

That is the real stake for a small budget. A plumber spending $1,500 a month on Google Ads with a known cost per booked job has a yardstick. Adding a channel without one makes it hard to say whether the money produced work. Measurement will tell a small business whether a test produced results; access to Ads Manager, which is opening gradually, decides when it can run one.

What changes day-to-day for SMB advertisers

Three practical shifts if you start running ChatGPT ads.

Creative has to fit the context. The new visual format appears while someone is generating an image, kept separate from that image. Headlines written for a Google results page, or a 15-second vertical video cut for TikTok, will not drop in cleanly. OpenAI has not published creative specifications, so treat short copy and one clear action as a hypothesis to test rather than a published requirement.

Suitability settings become a setup step. Enterprise advertisers maintain exclusion lists with thousands of entries and a person who owns them. A six-person agency does not. Negative Phrases are limited to qualifying advertisers, so check whether you qualify and read whatever default suitability settings OpenAI documents before a campaign runs, rather than after a screenshot lands in your inbox.

Attribution needs a named owner on your team. OpenAI offers a Conversions API and pixel and names a long list of attribution partners, but someone at your company has to connect your order data to them. For a service business, that usually means your booking system or CRM. For a product business, it means your checkout. Decide now who does that work. It is the difference between a test you can read and one you cannot.

How to fund and track ad spend on any channel

One account, one card, one category.

  1. 1 Revenue in

Revenue lands in business checking (card and ACH payouts).

Note: Novo does not accept cash deposits.

  2. 2 Pay with the Novo Debit Card

Pay ad charges with the Novo Debit Card — lock or freeze it in the app anytime.

  3. 3 Review & label

Review the charge and label it as advertising.

  4. 4 Sync to accounting

Transactions sync automatically to QuickBooks Online, Xero, or FreshBooks — categorize them as advertising.

  5. Outcome

Per-channel spend is already separated when you compare cost per conversion.

How much do ChatGPT ads cost for small businesses?

As of OpenAI's October 5, 2026 announcement, the company had not published pricing, CPMs, or minimum spends for ChatGPT ads. Ads Manager sells on a cost-per-thousand-impressions (CPM) or cost-per-click (CPC) basis, but OpenAI has not published rates. Any specific cost figure circulating now is someone's estimate.

Without published benchmarks, a small business cannot forecast the economics of a campaign: not the cost per click or per thousand impressions, not the conversion rate, not how many rounds of creative it would take to find something that works. Size a first test as money you can lose rather than money you are counting on.

If you get access through Ads Manager, one possible test plan:

  • Cap the test. Pick an amount you could lose entirely without changing another decision in the business. For many small advertisers that lands somewhere between $500 and $2,000 a month, but the number is yours to set from cash flow and current acquisition costs. It is not a figure OpenAI has published.
  • Define one conversion event before you spend a dollar. A booked call, a completed intake form, a paid order. One, not three.
  • Set a time box. Pick an end date, 60 days being a common length for a paid test, then make a go or no-go call on cost per conversion against your existing channels.
  • Avoid cutting a proven campaign solely to fund an unproven test. Set the test budget from your cash flow and how your current channels are performing.
  • Decide whether to wait for the visual format. It is being tested with an initial group of advertisers, and OpenAI has not said when it opens more broadly. A test through Ads Manager can show how ChatGPT traffic converts for you in the meantime.

How to fund and track ChatGPT ad spend

This part you can set up today, and it applies to every ad platform you already run.

Fund ad accounts from a dedicated business checking account.

Using a dedicated business checking account is one practical way to make that recordkeeping easier; it is not an IRS rule about account structure. Running ad spend through a personal card and reimbursing yourself later creates a reconciliation problem every January. Novo does not provide tax advice, so ask your CPA how to handle advertising deductions.

Put ad platforms on their own card. A Novo business checking account comes with the Novo Debit Card, a business debit Mastercard, and a virtual card is available once the account is approved. The card can be locked or frozen in the Novo app. Using the virtual card for ad-platform charges makes those transactions easier to pick out of a statement, and a bad charge on one platform does not sit on the same card as your other bills.

Mark the test budget so you can see it. Novo Reserves is a budgeting feature inside the Novo checking account, not a separate account, and you can create up to 20 Reserves. Create one called "ChatGPT ad test" to mark the amount you have set aside for the month. Funds in a Reserve remain part of your overall checking balance, so track what the campaign actually spends from the synced transactions in your accounting software.

Get the charges into your books. Novo integrates with QuickBooks Online, Xero, and FreshBooks, which sync transactions automatically. QuickBooks has its own pricing plans. Categorize the synced charges as advertising in your accounting software, and your per-channel spend is already separated when you sit down to compare cost per booked job across Google, Meta, TikTok, and ChatGPT.

Know the account terms before you route money through it. Novo business checking has no monthly fee and no minimum balance requirement, and standard ACH transfers have no Novo fee. Express ACH, which delivers the same day, has a 1.5% fee with a $0.50 minimum and a $20 maximum. An account that ends the day at $0 for 130 consecutive days may be closed.

One tradeoff, stated plainly: Because Novo does not accept cash deposits, the ad-spend setup described here is designed for businesses that receive revenue by card or ACH. If most of your revenue arrives as cash, you will need another route into an account first. You can deposit a money order or cashier's check with mobile check deposit in the Novo app, transfer from another bank, or receive payouts from a payment processor.

Cost per booked job is one key measure for a service-business ad test.

How can small businesses compare a new ad channel with existing channels?

Before you add a fourth channel, write down what the first three actually cost you. This fits on one page.

Paste that block into an LLM such as ChatGPT or Claude and ask it to build the working file for you. A prompt that works: "Turn this paid channel test scorecard into a Google Sheet with formulas that calculate cost per conversion for each row, a total row, and a cell that compares the new channel's cost per conversion to the lowest existing channel as a percentage." Ask for an Excel file or a fillable PDF instead if that is where your team already works.

What should small businesses confirm before buying ChatGPT ads?

Checklist

Four questions before you commit budget

These four answers decide whether the channel is usable by a small advertiser.

  1. 1

Does a named attribution partner, or OpenAI’s own pixel and Conversions API, connect to the tools you already run?

Partners named; check against your tools
  2. 2

When will the visual format open beyond the initial test group, and will it be sold through Ads Manager?

    Not stated in the announcement
  3. 3

Do you qualify for Negative Phrases, and what do the default suitability settings block?

    Partly stated; “qualifying” not defined
  4. 4

What does the visual format cost?

    Not stated in the announcement

Revisit questions 2 through 4 when OpenAI publishes more.

Four things to settle, each of which changes the answer for a small advertiser:

Whether a named partner connects to your tools. The measurement story only helps if a named partner, or OpenAI's own pixel and Conversions API, reaches the tools you already run. The announcement names more than a dozen partners, so check the list against your booking system, CRM, or checkout.

When the visual format opens up. Ads Manager is in beta and opening to more businesses gradually. The visual format starts with an initial group of advertisers, and the announcement does not say when, or how, others can buy it.

How much suitability control you get. Negative Phrases are limited to "qualifying advertisers," and the post does not define the term. Controls built for enterprise teams assume someone maintains them. The useful question for a small brand is what the defaults block on their own.

What the visual format costs. OpenAI has not published rates for ChatGPT ads or for the new format.

Treat the last three as unresolved until OpenAI publishes more. Coverage that fills those gaps with estimates is doing you no favors.

How can small businesses prepare for ChatGPT ads?

  1. Write down your current cost per conversion on every paid channel. Use the scorecard above. Without a baseline you cannot judge a new channel, and most owners find their existing numbers are fuzzier than they assumed.
  2. Pick your single conversion event and put a dollar value on it. Average ticket times close rate gets you close enough to start.
  3. Check access and measurement. Ads Manager sign-up is at ads.openai.com, with access opening gradually. Check whether your attribution tool is on OpenAI's partner list, or whether you would use OpenAI's pixel or Conversions API instead.
  4. Set up funding and tracking now. Use dedicated business checking, put ad-platform charges on a virtual card, mark the capped budget in a Reserve, and turn on accounting sync. Do it while the stakes are low rather than in the hour you are trying to launch a campaign.

A new ad channel is worth testing when you can measure it against the ones you already run. Most of the work that decision takes has nothing to do with OpenAI, and you can finish it before deciding whether to participate.

Frequently asked questions

When did OpenAI announce the new ChatGPT ad format?

OpenAI published "Building advertising for the way people use AI" on October 5, 2026, introducing a new visual ad format inside ChatGPT along with expanded measurement tools, attribution partnerships, and brand suitability controls.

What is the best business account for ad spend?

Look for a dedicated business checking account, a business debit card you can lock or freeze if a charge goes wrong, and an accounting integration that syncs your transactions. Novo business checking has no monthly fee and no minimum balance requirement, and standard ACH transfers have no Novo fee. Apply for a Novo account online. Applications are completed online and most take about 10 to 15 minutes. Most are reviewed within 24 hours; some take up to 72 hours. Eligibility is subject to final Novo determination.

How should I categorize ChatGPT ad spend in my books?

Tag it as advertising at the transaction level so per-channel spend is already separated when you compare results or prepare your return. Novo does not provide tax advice, so confirm treatment with your accountant.
