What business types can apply for an account?

Updated June 18, 2026

We support most business types. To apply, you’ll need to share some basic details and a few documents. Having these ready can speed things up.

What everyone needs:

Valid government-issued ID
Proof of U.S. address (like a utility bill or lease)
SSN
Employer Identification Number (EIN)
DBA certificate (if you use a business name that’s different from your legal name)

Sole proprietorships:
This includes freelancers, independent contractors, and unregistered businesses—whether you use your own name or a DBA. You’ll need both an SSN and an EIN to apply.

LLCs:
This includes single-member and multi-member LLCs. To apply, you must be listed on the LLC’s registration documents (as an owner, member, officer, or authorized representative).

If your LLC has multiple members, federal law requires information for anyone who owns 25% or more of the business.

Corporations:

An officer or registered agent must complete the application.

You’ll also need:
Articles of Incorporation (with an official filing stamp or seal)
Corporate bylaws
EIN

Partnerships:
Requirements vary by state, so check that your documents meet your state’s rules before you apply. To apply as a partnership, you’ll need:

Partnership agreement – outlines how the business runs and how partners work together

Certificate of partnership – a state-filed document for certain partnership types (like limited partnerships)

Nonprofits:
Since nonprofits don’t have owners, you can list yourself as the controlling member.

To apply as a nonprofit, you must already have 501(c)(3) status from the IRS. We’ll ask for your 501(c)(3) determination letter during the application. [link to What's a 501(c)(3)? FAQ]
