Can I remove a hold on a deposited check?

Updated June 18, 2026

For now, holds on deposited checks can't be removed or sped up once a hold is placed.

Holds are used to protect your account. When you deposit a check, the money isn't transferred instantly—it has to go through the Federal Reserve clearinghouses.

A hold ensures the check officially clears—before you spend the money— which can protect you from negative balances or overdrafts if a check were to not clear.
