If I'm a sole proprietorship, where is my business name?

Updated June 18, 2026

If you apply as a sole proprietor, your account is set up under your personal name—not a business name.

To use a business name, you’ll need an official DBA (Doing Business As), filed with your city, county, or state.

A DBA is also required if you want to deposit checks made out to your business name.

DBA requirements vary by location and business type. In most cases, you’ll file with your state or local office and pay a fee (usually $10–$100).
