Why is there a hold on my check?

Updated June 18, 2026

Check deposits aren’t available right away because they need more time to process.

Holds help protect your account. If there's a case where a check doesn’t clear and you’ve already spent the money, your account could go negative or payments could fail. A hold gives time to make sure the money is really there to spend.

What you can expect: You’ll see an estimated availability date when entering your check amount Once a hold is placed, it can’t be removed Hold times may change over time as more account history is built

To avoid holds in the future, you can always ask to be paid by ACH instead of check. ACH payments are usually faster go straight into your account.
