Why was my check returned?

Updated June 18, 2026

If a check was returned, it means the check was sent back to the issuer’s bank.

This can happen for a few reasons: there weren’t enough funds, the check details didn’t match, the signature was missing, or the issuing bank couldn’t verify it.

We’ll send you a returned check notice by mail, along with a legal copy of the returned check.

Next, you’ll need to contact the person who issued the check. They can provide a new check or another way to pay you.
